12 yr old girl inspires scientific paper on lionfish and ecology

I just love stories like this one, where children get to do real-life projects and make a difference in the world.

Lauren Arrington

12-year-old Mighty Girl Lauren Arrington knew that she wanted to study the invasive lionfish that is devastating her beloved reefs in Florida for her science fair project — but she didn’t expect that she would make an important scientific discovery that would earn her a credit in a scientific paper! Now 13, Lauren, who conducted the research last year in the sixth grade, discovered that the venomous fish which has been taking over reefs and killing native species throughout the Caribbean and off the East Coast of the US can survive in nearly fresh water.
